Mustard or Black Sarse is a cruciferous vegetable that is related to broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage. While there are almost 40 different types of mustard plants, there are only two varieties which we are used as staple in Indian kitchens - the black and the white. Each variety has unique healing properties like the black mustard seeds contain loads of glucosinolates, a phytonutrient that is known to protect against cancer. A great source of selenium and omega-3 fatty acids and manganese, black mustard seeds are also a good source of phosphorus, magnesium, copper and vitamin B1. They are also known to make the body warm, hence used especially used in North Indian winter delicacies. They are a rich source of folate along with vitamin A. You can also apply the paste of mustard seeds to combat muscle pain and reduce inflammation.
